Welcome to the Madness, a 75-minute multidisciplinary sequence of site-specific vignettes, presents a robust history of artistic innovation at Perry-Mansfield Performing Arts Camp in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. (This slogan is printed on its handbooks.) Actress/musician Charlotte Perry and dancer/ filmmaker Portia Mansfield met at Smith College, ventured west in 1913 during burgeoning careers, transforming vacant acres by hand into a vital hub of early modern dance and experimental theatre. An incubator for daring 20th-century performing artists, Perry-Mansfield became the heart of an American cultural circulatory system. The women also hosted the first Annual Symposium of the Arts that led to the formation of the NEA.
