Bernard Malamud's story ''The Angel Levine'' was the basis for a 1970 film starring Zero Mostel as Nathan Manischevitz, a poor, elderly tailor in New York of the 1950's, coping with the fatal illness of his wife, and Harry Belafonte as the unlikely answer to his prayers: a black Jewish Harlem hipster who claims to be an angel.
