The work is set in an unnamed African country and centers on two diplomatic couples and a servant over the span of a decade. The first consists of Antoine, a Canadian diplomat, and Eugene, his lover. Malcolm, a native servant, waits in vain for Antoine to write a letter of recommendation to allow him to abroad for university studies. Malcolm's employers are eventually replaced by Beth, a young diplomat, and her husband, Andrew, but Malcolm's situation does not change.
