In this telling of the Jewish fable, a woman, Leya, is posessed by the soul (dybbuk) of her head fiance, Khonnon; she can be freed only through exorcism. The composer blends elements of a Hasidic lament and klezmer folk dance with the more traditional arioso in a score accompanied by a chamber orchestra. The voices of the departed are amplified to contrast with those of the living.
