The story involves the morals or lack of them of the affluent set. A young architect, Ralph Lewin, and his wife, Ada, are invited to the home of Ralph's mentor, Clem Harris, an older professor of architecture at Columbia University. Cleam and his wife, Karla, are giving a part in honor of Max Adler, the brilliant former student of Ralph and Clem. At the party Ralph flirts with Karla, who is much younger than her husband, and plans to meet her at a motel later. As the evening progresses, however, Karla becomes upset and tries to pass a note to Ralph. She drops it, and it is picked up by Shirley Fisher, Clem's divorced secretary who was supposed to be Ralph's date, but she gives the missive to Ralph without reading it. Karla, it turns out, is six months pregnant.
