Synopsis
The work is set in 1899 in San Francisco. It concerns a self-taught dentist, McTeague, who rises to the top socially, only to lose everything; his wife, Trina Sieppe, who is obsessed with gold, his best friend Marcus Schouler, who is obsessed with Trina and therefore betrays his friend; and the immigrant servant Maria Macapa. McTeague recalls his happier existence via hallucinatory flashbacks, as he spends his last hours in Death Valley.
