Biography

David Cote is a librettist, playwright, and arts journalist based in New York City. Operas include Blind Injustice (Cincinnati Opera) with Scott Davenport Richards; Three Way (BAM and Nashville Opera) with Robert Paterson; The Scarlet Ibis (Prototype Festival and Chicago Opera Theater) and Fade (Second Movement, U.K.) with Stefan Weisman. David wrote text for the Black Lives Matter piece for baritone and orchestra, Invitation to a Die-In, with Nkeiru Okoye. Original cast recordings: Blind Injustice and Three Way. Plays include Saint Joe, Fear of Art, and Otherland. Upcoming premieres include Cocoa Cantata with Paterson and a micro-opera with Okoye co-commissioned by Cleveland Opera Theater and On Site Opera. David’s reporting and criticism appear in 4 Columns, Observer, and American Theatre. David has also written popular companion books to the hit musicals Wicked, Jersey Boys, and Spring Awakening.
