Biography

French librettist Paul Milliet (1848–1924) is best known today as co-librettist for Massenet's Werther.

Milliet was born in Rio de Janeiro. He first worked with Massenet in 1880, providing the text for the choral work Amour. He went on to provide the librettos for Massenet's operas Hérodiade (1881, co-written with Massenet's publisher Georges Hartmann) and Werther (1892, co-written with Hartmann and Edouard Blau). His works for other composers include the scenario to Lalo's ballet Néron (1891) and opera librettos for Gabrielle Ferrari's Le Cobzar (1909, co-written with Hélène Vacaresco) and Spyridon Samaras's Storia d'amore (1903), Mademoiselle de Belle-Isle (1905) and Rhea (1908). He was co-editor with Albert Soubies of the Almanach des spectacles, continuant l'ancien Almanach des spectacles publie de 1752 a 1815, and in 1923 was appointed Vice President of the Société des Auteurs et Compositeurs Dramatiques.

Milliet also worked widely as a translator, providing French translations of operas including Cavalleria rusticana, La vida breve, Elektra, Andrea Chénier, Siberia and Isidore de Lara's Amy Robsart.
