A musical comedy for children, Heavenfields has three principal characters: Lucretia, a girl of ten or eleven (to be played by a young actress with a good medium-high soprano voice and moderate dancing skills); Lobquin, a leprechaun (to be played by a small actor with a light tenor voice and good dancing skills); and an alien (to be played by a dancer) whose voice is created electronically. But other characters appear too, for the musicians are integrated into the theatrical action. They begin as mimes, portraying elementary school children as they play excerpts from music heard later in the work. Later, they become specific characters: the trombonist is the class clown, the conductor is the teacher, and the E?clarinet represents the teacher's voice. Although these roles demand no great acting skills, they do offer musicians a unique (and perhaps welcome) opportunity to play something besides their instruments!
