The comical-but-true story begins when Grant Woods is at his dentist's office and notices the power and beauty of Dr. McKeeby's hands. Grant explains those hands go with the house he saw in Eldon, Iowa two weeks prior – a "cardboardy" farm house with an enormous gothic window. Grant must convince his somber, elderly dentist and reluctant sister to pose for what we know will become his masterpiece. When Grant finally reveals that his dentist resembles Grant's deceased father, the opera takes a poignant turn and ends reverentially as the final iconic pose comes together for what is perhaps the most beloved painting in the world.
