Biography
Brian Hulse B.M. Utah, M.M. Illinois, Ph.D. Harvard, composes chamber music and opera, writes on the philosophy of sound and music, and teaches music theory at the College of William & Mary, where he is Associate Professor of Music. Among Hulse's many professional activities include several seasons as Composer-in-Residence for Intermezzo: the New England Chamber Opera Series and direction of the composition program at the soundSCAPE Festival (Italy) for eight years. His CD Pseudosynthesis appears on Albany Records. Another CD, Stain, with conductor Paul Bhasin, was released by Centaur Records. Hulse's writings are found in diverse journals such as Perspectives of New Music and Deleuze Studies. His co-edited volume Sounding the Virtual: Gilles Deleuze and the Theory and Philosophy of Music is published by Ashgate. Hulse's article On the Spacetime of Auditory Sense was recently published by the Journal of Music Research Online. He is currently working on a full-scale opera based on Edith Wharton's Ethan Frome.
