Judith Lane
Composer
Biography
Composer/Librettist Judith C. Lane has written a variety of music-theatre pieces ranging from children’s musicals to larger scale works and opera, working both in collaboration with other composers and solo. Born in Rochester, NY, she earned a BA in music composition and creative writing from Bennington College, and an MFA from NYU’s Musical Theatre Writing Program, where she was a recipient of the Oscar Hammerstein II Scholarship and the Yip Harburg Fellowship. She is a 2-time recipient of the BRIO Award (Bronx Recognizes Its Own) for playwriting from the Bronx Council on the Arts, and was selected as the ASCAP Composer-In-Residence for her work in the Metropolitan Opera Guild’s “Creating Original Opera” program. She has received five ASCAP Special Awards for music composition and has been awarded artist’s residencies at Yaddo Artist’s Colony, the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, Villa Montalvo, Fundacion Valparaiso (in southern Spain) and the Julia and David White Artist’s Colony (in Costa Rica). Ms Lane is also the author of a children’s book entitled “Buster, Where Are You?” with illustrations by her sister, Nancy Lane. She is a member of the Dramatist’s Guild, ASCAP, Opera America and the American Composer’s Forum. She lives in the Bronx with her husband, the artist Daniel Hauben.
