Synopsis
The story of a young girl who works 14 hours a day in the cotton mills of Lowell, MA in the 1840s. She struggles to learn to read and write, and ultimately leads a strike at the mill for the 10-hour work day. The opera deals with themes of literacy and the historical beginnings of the labor reform movement.
