The Purple Gang
Composer:David Jex
Librettist:Christine Child
Synopsis
The Purple Gang chronicles the takeover of Toledo by Yonnie Licavoli and his gang during Prohibition. Jackie Kennedy, native Toledoan, and popular owner of speakeasies, defies the brutal gang by underselling beer and refusing to pay tribute. One attempt on his life results in the death of his current girlfriend, Louise Bell. Eight months later, Kennedy is gunned down while walking on the beach with twenty year old beauty queen Audrey Ralls. Toledo's prosecuting attorney, Frazier Reams, vows the Purple Gang will be stopped. Reams' diligence and fearlessness result in the recovery of the gun used to murder Kennedy, and, ultimately, in the conviction of Licavoli and twelve gang members for first degree murder and conspiracy.
