Margarita
Composer:Gamma Skupinsky
Librettist:Richard Gales
Synopsis
The story is based on the book of a russian writer Michail Bulgakov “Master and Margarita”. Temptation, evil and sacrifice are the key ingredients in this surreal love story. The opera takes place before and on the Halloween Night. Woland (a.k.a. Satan) arrives in The City for his annual Grand Ball. An entourage of wisecracking, supernatural sidekicks accompany him: a Cat, a Vampiress and a Transvestite. Margarita searches for her lover who mysteriously disappeared. Woland offers to help Margarita if she agrees to be the Queen at his Grand Ball. Margarita accepts the offer. Margarita is transformed into a witch and flies on a broomstick to be the Queen at Woland’s (Satan’s) Ball. At the end of the ball, Margarita is reunited with her lost love, however events take an unexpected turn. The story is a combination of romance, supernatural happenings and slapstick humor. The suspense and drama are expressed through a variety of musical styles.
