Gamma Skupinsky
Composer
Biography
Skupinsky had piano and violin training in his youth and studied composition and instrumentation with Albert Leman at the Moscow Conservatory . In 1979 he fled to the USA. There he continued his compositional training with Malcolm Peyton at the New England Conservatory of Music and studied jazz with George Russell and William Thomas McKinley .
This was followed by doctoral studies with Marjorie Merryman (composition), Charles Fussell (conducting) and Joel Sheveloff (music history) at Boston University . In addition, Skupinsky attended master classes with Dmitri Shostakovich , Aram Khachaturian , Georgi Sviridov , Pierre Boulez , John Cage and George Perle .
Skupinsky's compositions cover a broad stylistic spectrum from classical music through jazz, pop and folk to film music. A ballet for electronic music and the rock oratorio E=mc² were created while still in Russia. Many of the compositions he wrote in Russia must have been lost after fleeing persecution by the party and the secret service.
