The Shot
Composer:Gamma Skupinsky
Librettist:Gamma Skupinsky
Synopsis
A party is taking place at the home of Silvio. Silvio is a mysterious man who for unknown reason left the army, but spends his days practicing shooting. At the party a guest Rusanov challenges him to a duel, but Silvio declines. Later, in conversation with his friend Belkin, he admits to have an unfinished business. A few years ago he was offended by the Count and, at the duel refused to shoot. Silvio still has the right to a shot. Six years pass since this incident and Belkin, who retired from the army, lives in his estate. One day Belkin is invited to his neighbor to ball. From a conversation with the host, The Count, Belkin finds out the end of Silvio's story. The Count recalls the day when Silvio arrived to his house to redeem his right to a shot. After an argument, he forces The Count to shoot again. The Count misses and the bullet hits the picture on the wall. Seeing The Count confused and scared, Silvio is satisfied and stops the duel. As he leaves The Count's home he turns and shoots without aiming. His bullet hits the same hole in the picture that was previously made by The Count.
