Synopsis
The Duchess of Malfi, who has been widowed at a young age, is prevented from remarrying by her brothers, the Cardinal and Ferdinand. To see that she does not defy them and dishonor the family, the brothers place a spy, Daniel de Bosola, in their sister's household. The Duchess secretly weds her majordomo, Antonio Bologna. When her action is discovered, she is imprisoned and tortured, and Ferdinand is killed in a fight with Bosola, who has repented his betrayal. This was the first American opera to have its premiere at Wolftrap.
