Discovering that his wife, Lady Magnesia, has a lover, Adolphus Bastable, George Fitzollemache determines to stab his wife and hides in her bedchamber. When Adolphus enters, George feeds him poison. To save Adolphus, Lady Magnesia says she will become George's lover rather than his obedient servant and wife. The couple try to save Adolphus by feeding him lime, including plaster and a bust of a Lady Magnesia, but the young man, instead, turns into a human statue. The landlord, police officer, and doctor rush into tsee what the commotion is about. They are struck by a bolt of lightning and turned to ashes. Lady Magnesia and George, left alone, pledge their love and place the statue of Adolphus in the corner.
