The opera examines various escapes by Reinaldo Arenas, a gay Cuban novelist and poet, political dissident, and prisoner. They include flight form Cuba after Reinaldo, befriended by Ovido and Pepe, is betrayed by the latter. The story also portrays his interaction with Victor, a prison official. Reinaldo comes to the United States, eventually dying of AIDS.
