The setting is a 1930s American city. A young medical school graduate, Tom, develops a plan to overcome serious financial difficulties to prove he is prepared to support his fiancée, Amelia. If he fails to do so in a month's time, she will accept the proposal of his nemesis, James. James, pretending to be Tom's friend, gives him advice to ensure that Tom's "perfect plan" will fail.
